Lynch was miscast
In the film The Day of the Jackal (1973), Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, albeit an earlier model. Mentioned in Graham Norton & Guests: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). Bottom line: Redmayne is a master at this.
Overall, the story is a viable adaptation
Unfortunately, the lead characters are not equal, which distracts from a spectacular, high-quality production. There’s no point in criticizing Lynch, it’s just that Redmayne set the bar so high. A more experienced actor could provide a more believable counterpart/adversary needed to challenge the Jackal.
The fraud barometer is constantly running in the background
The character development works, though some things are simply left open-ended in the main character’s narrative, but that may be desirable. The locations, Redmayne’s varied interactions and speech patterns, and the character shifts really add a special layer to the story arc. I can’t wait to see how Se01 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Se02.
If this happens, Se02 could prove to be quite promising
I hope Lynch tones it down to be less forced and delivers a more nuanced performance to try and match Redmayne’s.
