A serious theater director is tasked with remaking her former mentor’s most famous work, the opera Salome. Some disturbing memories from her past allow her repressed trauma to color the present. Telling an incredible story that weaves together beautiful scenes and a rich musical score through what seems like typical Egoyan disjointed storytelling. Egoyan’s genius is his ability to portray the brutality of the human experience with tenderness and compassion. This film is on par with the best of Hollywood, and even better for its intelligence and timeliness of its message. Amanda Seyfried’s lead role as Jeanine is absolutely perfect, along with a first-rate cast that is sure to leave audiences satisfied. I enjoyed this film before its public release and it was truly a treat.
